January, a new beginning for Summer Rain Farm!

🌿
Title: A New Year Begins at Summer Rain Farm

Happy New Year to my fellow flower lovers!

As we welcome January, the farm has settled into a quieter rhythm — one that invites reflection, planning, and dreaming of the seasons ahead.

❄️ What’s Happening Around Our Farm

Flowers Sleeping Under Snow
During this cold month of January, our tulip bulbs and daffodils are tucked safely beneath a white blanket of snow. This period of cold is essential — it allows the bulbs to rest and develop properly so they can reward us with strong stems and beautiful blooms come spring. Even when the garden looks still, so much magic is happening beneath the surface.

Beekeeping Updates & Hope for Spring

We’ve ordered new nucs of bees for the May 24 weekend. These small boxes include a queen, worker bees, and baby bees on four frames — a fresh start for our apiary.
Last year brought some hive losses, even though we were fortunate to harvest plenty of honey. Beekeeping can be a tough job as we face challenges like harsh weather, mites, yellow jackets, mice, and pesticide exposure. We’ve been quite lucky over the past few years, but this past season reminded us how fragile and precious our bees truly are.

Eggs & Winter Chicken Care

Our chickens are safely tucked in for winter with netting over their run and a warm coop to roost in at night. After losing a few to hawks last year, we redesigned their space to offer the best protection possible. Chickens don’t mind the cold much, but they definitely don’t like snow — so we shovel walking areas for them daily. With all the heavy snow and freezing rain lately, this area has needed a lot of extra upkeep.

🌱 January Planning & Garden Dreams

January is also our planning season. From ordering seeds and designing garden layouts to timing bloom growth and harvests, this is when the year ahead really starts to take shape.
We’re stocking up on bouquet supplies like paper wrap, rubber bands, and flower food, while keeping a close eye on our stored dahlia tubers. Flipping through seed catalogues is one of my greatest January pleasures — dreaming about all the flowers that will bloom in our gardens. I also take time now to plan our veggie garden for the coming season.

☀️ A Little Time Away

We’re feeling incredibly blessed to enjoy a warm getaway in January. This time away allows us to rest, recharge, and renew ourselves before the busy months ahead. We used to travel for our anniversary in September (we just celebrated our 42nd year!), but harvest season, canning, and garden cleanup made that timing nearly impossible. January has become our season to pause.
